Now that January is safely out the way, it's time to talk about one of my favourite things.....donuts!! Not just any kind of donuts though, oh no, I'm talking about the most awesome ones found only at Vicky's Donuts. I know you may be thinking, hmm this is an interesting post to follow on from my fitness edit, but well it's Friday and as they say, a little of what you fancy, does you good.
Vicky's bakery is based in Hackney, East London and specialises in handmade, raised donuts using only the very best ingredients. The dough is made in small batches using free-range eggs and whole milk and contains no artificial preservatives or flavourings. Vicky's love of baking and numerous trips to visit family in Toronto, Canada led her to setup Vicky's Donuts in 2015 with the idea to create North-American style donuts using only the best ingredients.
I discovered Vicky's Donuts quite by chance on Chatsworth Road Market having gone to the market to visit Geo-Fleur's stall and it turned out Sophie and Vicky were stall neighbours (Geo-Fluer now has a studio in the East Village, London and Vicky is now at Kerb Food market). Well it would have been rude not to pick up a donut while we were there and the rest is history as they say, because I was hooked from the moment I bit into the donut!
A word of warning though, if you're planning to visit Vicky at Kerb, make sure to get there sooner rather than later as believe me those donuts sell fast! I turned up with two friends once and Vicky only had one mini donut left! We shared it between the three of us and it was amazing even if we had anticipated having more than just one bite of a donut when we arrived at the market.
All donut flavours are Vicky's own creations featuring a combination of classic favourites and inventive originals with each recipe having been handcrafted in her own kitchen through a lengthy process of experimentation and taste-testing. (Oh to be a donut taste tester! A girl can dream!). The mint green vanilla bean donuts are my absolute favourite, yes my mint green obsession is still going strong, but the donuts taste so so good!
If you're based in London, the exciting news is that Vicky's Donuts take orders for 12 donuts or more and provide custom orders or event packages. Pickup is from the kitchen in Hackney from 12pm Tuesday - Saturday or you can have them delivered via same-day courier between 12-5pm Tuesday - Saturday. Contact Vicky at hello@vickysdonuts.com for orders or more information.
There is even more exciting news if you're London based or will be visiting London on Sat 25 February as Vicky is running a donut decorating workshop that morning at West Elm! My friend Ade and I had a great time at Vicky's donut decorating workshop at the Hoxton Hotel last Summer. We got so excited just walking into the room and breathing in the delicious donut aroma. It was amazing! Vicky talked us through what to do and the different decoration effects we could create and then we were let loose on the icing, sprinkles, edible flowers and of course donuts to create our own donut masterpieces. All the materials were provided as well as a complimentary cocktail and we got to take our creations home with us, well if they made it that far before being eaten of course. We had sooooo much fun trying out different designs, my favourites were the party ring style and the pretty edible flower designs.
Vicky will be on hand at the workshop to show you how to recreate some of their most-loved flavours and designs. There’ll be a selection of fillings, toppings and sprinkles for you to get your hands on so that you can make your very own creations. Vicky will teach you those all important icing skills and give you some tips and tricks to ensure success for you to become a dough-pro. So if you'd like to give it a go yourself, you can book a ticket for the upcoming workshop here.
(Please note, the workshop is not suitable for those allergic to gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts or peanuts. Suitable for veggies.)
If you're not able to make it to the donut decorating workshop in London, don't despair! Vicky shared her donut recipe in the Summer edition of Betty magazine, so you can recreate the donut magic at home.
Right, I don't know about you, but I have a serious donut craving now, it's time to go put the kettle on I think.
